Lady with Fan, also known as the woman with the fan was painted by Gustav Klimt in 1917. The Lady wears a kimono and fan in the Japanese style, and figures reminiscent of oriental tapestry grace the perspectiveless background in a wall tapestry. Klimt’s work borrows heavily from the Symbolist, Impressionist, and Art Nouveau movements, and all of those influences can be seen in Lady with Fan. The extensive use of golds, greens, and reds in this piece and the highly stylized background give it a much sharper feel than most Nouveau works, which tend toward flowing naturalism and wall art ideas.
