I bought an induction hob to reduce my carbon emissions, from cooking with gas. Since induction is energy efficient, and if electricity is produced from sustainable sources, this should help reduce global warming. A shame it had to be manufactured in China - the carbon embedded in making and transporting it is probably quite high!
It arrived safely, looks good, works OK, and brings water to the boil extremely rapidly. I would have given 5 stars if it came with a useful guide on how to cook with it.
For example, the instruction sheet does not explain that control of temperature and power are not independent; if you try to set both, the first one just reverts to the default setting. Since I've only ever used temperature in ovens, I ignore the temperature control, and just adjust power. There is no guide as to which power setting to use when, and most online guides I found only talked about magnetic pots - nothing about power settings.
My first uses quite often involved pasta, which tends to froth and boil over if heat is too high. I found that the hob heats so quickly and powerfully, I have to watch the pasta as it comes to the boil, and turn down the power progressively as it heats, else it boils over before I can reduce the heat. The hob does respond instantly to a change of power. To simmer, I reduce power to the minimum, 120w. I've found with previous hobs that higher power tends to make food stick and burn to the bottom of the pot much more easily than with gas - but the minimum setting on this hob seems to simmer OK.
