Separate Headboards

If you're in the market for a super-comfy bed, you might not always be such a fan of the headboard that comes with it. Maybe it's too plain or feels too big or small for your bedroom. Other beds come without a headboard. These give you the freedom to keep things simple and not have a headboard or invest in one that suits your current decorating scheme. If you have an old bed that you're growing bored of it's much cheaper to buy a new headboard than a whole new bed frame. Simple additions like a headboard, new linen and matching rug will update your bedroom in minutes.

Sizes of Headboards

You should be able to get a headboard that matches your bed, whether it's a single, double, king, or super king. Separate headboards are also available for more niche sizes like small doubles, European doubles and emperor beds. It's important to measure up carefully before you buy. Make sure your chosen headboard is the right size for your style of bed. Some will only work with divan styles. Others are best suited to classic wooden or metal frames. It's a good idea to check the assembly instructions before you buy, to make sure the headboard is compatible.

Fabric and Upholstery Options

Our headboards come in an array of fabrics for both the luxurious and practically-minded. If durability is your main priority, consider fabrics that are a blend of cotton and polyester. Also, go for headboards in darker fabrics like grey or navy blue. For extra style points, velvet headboards in blush pink or teal green always look stunning. Remember though that these can be harder to clean and show marks more easily. Padded or quilted styles make bedrooms look homely and warm. If you're more of a minimalist though, try units upholstered in distressed brown leather for an industrial feel.

Styles of Headboards

The most common headboard designs are either rectangular or with a gentle curve. These usually attach to the bottom of your bed, below the head of your mattress. Wooden slatted styles are also popular, as well as antique-feel wrought iron headboards with ornate details. Other options include headboards studded with diamantés or press-studs, painted or printed headboards or styles with cut-out designs. Wicker and hessian styles are also becoming more popular thanks to their natural, earthy feel.

How to Clean Headboards

Headboards can be prone to staining over the years, but they should be fairly easy to keep clean. Fabric headboards should be wiped down with a damp cloth to remove dust. Then use an upholstery cleaner to spot clean if necessary. Wooden and metal headboards shouldn't stain, but they can get dusty. Use a microfibre cloth with furniture polish to get rid of most of the dust. If there are any dusty, hard-to-reach nooks and crannies you can use a handheld hoover to suck up the remaining dirt.

Headboards with Storage

A headboard with storage is the perfect way to organise your home. Usually made from wood, they come with a large number of drawers and storage compartments next to, and above, the top of your bed. This provides plenty of extra space for bedside lamps, chargers and books. Closed cupboards will help keep clutter at bay. They're also handy for storing a few extra sheets, pillowcases and towels. Then there are open shelves that let you display your favourite books, framed pictures and potted plants.

Other Bedroom Essentials

Once you've attached your new headboard, why not pick up a couple of matching throw pillows to complete the look? You could also add some new bedding in a contrasting shade, with a duvet cover, pillowcases and maybe a quilt or throw for those chilly nights. Accentuate your new headboard with some bedside lamps. Metal or glass reading lamps can be attached to the wall and angled to provide just the right amount of light. For your bedside tables, add an alarm clock, some framed photos, and a trinket tray for everyday jewellery, coins and keys.
