Some of the most loved and recognised animals are faux and le chateau des animaux is a nod to them. “The chateau’s grounds give our family lots of opportunity to go “on safari” … but inside? Well… a fantastical unicorn welcomes you in the grand entrance and Arthur and Dorothy enjoy mealtimes with a giraffe and zebra in the salle à manger – and why not?! The chateau was made for fun and laughter and my art nouveau design captures these special moments.”

A whimsical wonderland… the new 'le cirque du chateau' collection is inspired by angel Strawbridge's love of the carnival, fairground memorabilia and all that ‘fun of the fair. Angel’s children, Arthur and Dorothy, adore their fabulous furry friends and love that they are featured as playful circus characters. The Strawbridge family’s obsession with punch and Judy puppets and traditional funfair attractions is really celebrated in this playful design. “I’ve been collecting vintage fairground memorabilia for as long as I can remember and for me 'le cirque du chateau’ evokes all the joy of a family day out: The sights, sounds and thrills of the circus or a traditional fairground ride – there’s nothing quite like it! This collection makes me smile!”

Surrounded by a beautiful moat, the chateau is the perfect backdrop for such an elegant and symbolic creature. ‘Nouveau heron’ combines this elegance and symbolism in a design which encapsulates these qualities to perfection.“we are very lucky to be surrounded by a moat. Not only is it peaceful and full of fish, but every morning a heron perches on a rock and eats our fish. Dorothy has taken a real liking to our adopted heron, often shouting at the top of her voice ‘the heron... The heron!’, it often flies off at this point, but we all run to the window to see it in flight!”

Built almost 150 years ago, the chateau is an ever-changing account of those who have lived in it. Inspired by her wallpaper finds in the attics, angel decided to make her own unique contribution to the chateau’s history. “I always say this is a script you cannot write. What are the chances of finding the entire collection of off-cuts! The wallpaper museum has become a favourite story on our tv series, escape to the chateau. Who could have imagined that this would open up the future to my own chateau-inspired designs? Five years on and I am proud to have a portfolio of designs big enough to re-create the wallpaper museum. What’s even better is seeing the past and present come together.”

Some of these are captured by angel in this stunning design, while the autumnal tones reflect the colour palette of a particularly golden season at the chateau. “The grounds surrounding the chateau are incredibly exciting and the subject of many morning chats staring out of the straw bridge suite window. We are so lucky to be able to go on long walks, trying to spot deer, hedgehogs and squirrels hiding away in the woodland. There is an abundance of natural beauty and with Arthur and Dorothy at the perfect age, exploring nature is always on the agenda!”

Since then, the grounds have been a rich source of inspiration, but in 2019 they visited the gardens of Giverny to see Monet's home and studio.“ There is something very special about being by water. When looking for our forever home, being close to water was on our ‘must-have list’! It was definitely love at first sight when we saw the chateau and the moat really was the icing on the cake. Sometimes you draw upon the beauty of other places to enhance your own home. Our whole family loved the lilypond at Giverny and it seemed only right to take this inspiration straight to our own moat! That year, we planted 30 lily rhizomes and could not believe it when a couple of months later, they gave us week upon week of flowers. We watched the lilies change daily...who knew they only flower when they’ve had three hours of light! Then when the light goes the lilies gently close and go to sleep... Isn’t nature fascinating?”

On the fourth floor of the chateau, a room patiently awaited some tlc. The former servant’s quarters look out over dick & angel’s walled garden, the “potagerie”. The room waited nearly four years to be given the attention it deserved, and in that time, the potagerie had begun its transformation – and the view got better and better and better. Dick duly named the room “the potagerie suite”, and from that moment it too started to come to life... “The kitchen garden is dick’s passion, though a little outside my comfort zone. That said, there is such strong shape and form to be found there that I couldn’t resist combining my love for art deco shapes with items from the garden tended so lovingly by my husband. The appearance of carrots, courgettes, artichokes, sweet pea and, of course, bees really scream, “garden!” to complete the cottage garden feel I even took inspiration from the flowers on the century-old wallpaper that was originally in the room.” for angel, design needs to tell a story. This one is about love.
